Playstation 3 Console – Broken Apart
Playstation 3 Unit Dissected and PS3 Hard-Drive upgraded to 120 GB

Being that the units are already popping up in Japan , it should come as little surprise that the PlayStation 3 has been cracked open and laid bare for all to see. Even better, however, is the little trick to dismount the drive sled and replace the 20 or 60GB 1.8-inch drive with another more capacious model (as we heard you would be able to). One adventurous modder upped his unit to 120GB; see, maybe that $500 model can be of some use to us after all.

I have a playstation 3 (CECHG01) 40GB model I upgraded the playstation to a 320gb hard drive and recently i opened up the playstation to clean the large ported fan but some how there was a short in one of the USB ports that melted my USB soders all the way around on my motherboard to my hard drive reader plugin and to all my video and audio outputs. I want to fix the problem myself just by replacing the motherboard and the built in processors. What advice would one give me about reparing it. I no longer have it under warranty.

About the only thing you could do would be to bite the bullet and spend $149.00(+) to send it in to Sony’s service senter (out of warrenty). The reson is this:
1] The BD/DVD drive is coded to work only with that motherboard.
2] For the damage that you say was done, you otherwise may as well get a new unit.
You should be honest when contacting Sony since they have all the needed stuff to setup the system again. However, since you blew the board, it may cost you more to replace it through them then the flat rate. If you don’t tell them what happened up frount, then when they look inside, they will know what happened and they would be upset and charge you even more to repair it then if you had told them.
(If they know what to expect, They can get right on it without trying to plug it in and doing more damage.)
It’s all up to you. Get the estimite from Sony before committing to buying a new unit. Hopefully its cheeper through Sony.

I have a PS3 console, one of the larger 80gb models, not the new slim version.I was using it in the vertical position and it fell over when a cable got pulled in front of it. It simply fell onto its face but now it wont work, it begins to boot up but then just shuts down after a few seconds.
I live in South Africa and the console was bought in the UK. there is a company here that deals with PS3 repairs (it is not sony but I think it is an official third party) they have refused to do any physical repairs to the unit due to it being bought overseas. They have however offered to do a console swap and exchange my unit for a new one without any delay. they would simply send my console back to the UK and give me a new one on the spot, but they want to charge me a ridiculous amount of money to do this.
do you know the possible cause of my console not working after a minor fall? would you suggest I do the swap or take it to am unofficial reapirs shop and get them to fix it but run the risk of voiding my warranty? any help would be greatly appreciated.
