  Soldier of Fortune                                                                                                                  1/01/2001
Ravensoft Soldier of Fortune is the latest first person shooter, with a twist of realism that will either take you in and not let go, or repulse you to the point of never playing the game again. If you are like me, its a little bit of both.

It has the standard multi-weapon capability, as well as a few interesting items to be found. It is couched in a pretty thin plot line; you play a mercenary working for a secret organization called The Shop, and you are hired to shut down a terrorist group. Pretty standard stuff...

The real draw of this game, though, is the realism of the kills. For instance...with the sniper rifle (complete with a zooming telescopic sight) I was able to zoom in close to an enemies head...when I pulled the trigger, I saw a small red dot appear in his forehead, and the wall behind him was covered in blood! Add to this the fact that if you shoot an enemy in the leg, he grabs his leg! Hit him in the shoulder, he grabs his shoulder! Hit him in the head / chest / groin...well, you get the picture.

The game takes you to several real world locations (Japan, Middle East etc.) and the enemies are easy to despise. (They brutally kill a few innocents along the way, just to heighten your want to do the same to them).

The graphics are very pretty as long as you have a nice high-end computer. Anything less than a Pentium II 333 mhz and it gets a bit choppy. I am running a Pentium III 550 with 96 meg ram, and there is the occasional slow down (though not enough to affect the game in any substantial way).

It has a multi-player online capability as well. I have tried it, and the only drawback that I can find is that you cannot play cooperatively, against the NPC's. All of the scenarios I found were player vs. player or team vs. team. The play is pretty smooth over the net, but naturally the more players on the server, the slower the play will be.

The game can get pretty intense (as most of these games can), and I was actually shocked by some of the graphic images in the game. In an effort to soften the gruesome nature of the game play, they added a parental lock to block out the blood and guts.

Lock or no, my nine year old son isn't getting anywhere near this one! Now if I can only tear myself away from it...

Ups: Amazing realism. No holds barred graphics. Parental lock.
Downs: Over all game play is repetitive. Beyond the realism, there is not much new here.
Lowdown: Captures and holds your attention, but lets it go quickly.

Overall Score: 80

What do others have to say:

Besides the impressive new damage model, this is just another first person shooter. Too much time trying to find levers to pull in the game, and the fun faded fast.                                        by Jared
