Star Trek: Klingon Academy                                   07/19/00 10:14 PM Eastern

The General speaks. As a cadet, I am excited to finally enter battle with our enemies. It is time to train in the art of command and tactics.

I started as a cadet in the Klingon Officer Academy under General Chang (of ST:VI Undiscovered Country fame). After speaking to us about honor and glory, I chose the simulation mode to train. Amongst the Klingons, a warrior race, the goal is to act honorably and also decisively. One wrong move could cause your mission to fail, and you have to begin all over again. After training, you move onto special missions that you are hand-picked for, and they range from clearing a system of enemy vessels to sneaking up on a traitor's vessel to within 50 yards of their bridge without being detected (very tough!)

The graphics were wonderful, and the audio highly recommended. You can choose the sound levels of the music, audio, and SFX as well as the number and randomness of explosions.

The keyboard control interface, or VOS (Voice Order System), was quite simple to operate, and  learn.  The navigating between the ship's systems was effortless (unlike Starfleet Command). The joystick ship control, which again I would highly recommend, is easy to use; however, the turn rate of the vessels was sometimes sluggish but not detrimentally so. The beginning cinematics are SUPER, and you find out how Chang got his eye patch. The game locked up a couple of times, but I am pretty sure that it wasn't due to the game, but probably my PC's drivers. I tested a couple of things and that's why I didn't believe the game to be the culprit.  I also hadn't seen any info in the README.txt that indicated any lock-up problems.

Overall, the authenticity to the Star Trek Canon is well matched. The story and missions are very engaging.  The game, although challenging, is not impossible if you use all your resources. I would like to see games of this type have a little faster reaction time regarding the ship speed. Other than that, it is a fantastic game for Trekkers or non-Trekkers alike.
